I hate to sell!
Actually that may not be a strong enough word—I despise selling! I despise calling on prospects who don’t know me and see me as an interruption to their busy day. I really despise the time it takes to call 100 people just to set up 20 appointments. I despise the time it takes to meet with the 10 people who didn’t cancel their appointments, and I despise spending an hour finding out that they only kept the appointment so I would leave them alone in the future.
But I know that every business, no matter what service or product you provide, is really in the sales and marketing business. If you don’t sell, you don’t have any customers. And a business without customers is called a hobby. Plus the rent, utilities, employees, etc. insist on being paid every month whether I have made a sale or not. So we keep selling.
So one day I made the decision to stop selling! I made the decision to stop being a pest and to wait until I was invited by the decision maker to help them solve their problem. I wanted to become the welcome expert who was called in to fix their problems.
